Study On Identity Theft And Cybercrime Information Technology Essay

Identity theft is a growing problem across the western world. It seems that no matter how you protect your personal information, there are criminals who manage to steal it. They use it to their own advantage against you!

Market research shows that the incidence of identity theft crime in Australia is on the rise. In 2009 the credit reporting agency Veda Advantage, released its’ latest research statistics, that show the incidence of identity theft in Australia is increasing. Approximately 4.4 million Australians (26%) have been affected by identity theft*, compared to 3.8 million (23%) for the same period the previous year.

The Identity Theft Report also found that 67% of Australians have failed to adopt even the simplest of measures to protect themselves from identity theft. This is a small improvement from the previous year where 70% of Australians said they had not taken any steps.

In this book I will tell victims’ stories…

I use my personal experience, victims’ stories, news reports and practical illustrations to make the e-book more readable. Personal experiences are true and victims’ stories have been thoroughly checked out before they were used. News reports from reputable news sources are cross-referenced and footnoted. Illustrations and examples are just that… they are not true stories but used simply to illustrate a point.

I have written this book from an identity theft victim’s point of view. The purpose is to prevent you from becoming the next identity theft victim. If you have already become an identity theft victim, this book will give you all the practical help that you may need to clear your name.

I have also written this book specifically for new Internet users… to help them tame the wild beast called the Internet. This book is written in a language that ordinary people can understand. There is very little technical jargon. If I use jargon, I make sure that it is very well explained. This e-book also covers practical procedures that you can adopt to protect yourself from any type of cyber crime.

Further, I will show you how to use advanced software to protect your children from Internet predators. You need to know how to keep them safe when they are on social networking websites like MySpace and FaceBook, Internet Chatrooms and Internet Blogs.

Finally, I will show you how hackers can access your home computer without your knowledge or consent. I will then take you step-by-step and show you how you can beat the identity thieves.

You should read this book if you are:

A person who has never heard of identity theft crime before; or

An Internet surfer who operates from home or Internet cafes; or

Why write another book about identity theft?

Our research has shown that there are approximately 100 books written about identity theft that are currently on the market. So, why write another book about this subject?

Most of the books are written for the American market and cover the USA laws, identity theft cases and procedures. Of the 100 books written on this subject there are nine (9) books written for the UK market, two (2) books written for the Canadian market and eighty-nine (89) books written for the USA market. This is the first book that has been written specifically for the Australian market.

The Australian market is different to the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom. The laws relating to identity theft, cyber crime and spam are distinctly Australian. Laws from other countries simply do not apply in Australia. Consumer protection procedures are also different from the corresponding procedures of other countries.

Australians need to know their consumer rights and how they can protect themselves from identity theft under Australian law. For example, you should ask yourself these questions:

How does Australian law protect you from a person who steals your mail and uses your details to take out a bank loan in your name…without your knowledge or consent?

How does Australian law protect you from a hacker in another country who takes over your computer and steals your personal banking details?

How does Australian law protect your personal data when it has been outsourced to a company in India?

What can Australian law do to data brokers selling you data to identity thieves?

What can Australian law do to protect your data, if it is stolen from a computer in another country?

As an Australian citizen, you need to understand the rights and protections afforded to you under Australian law. You will not find the answers to these questions in a book written by an American author specifically for the USA market.

When researching this book, I found that many Australians have been searching the Internet to solve problems relating to identity theft like:

What is identity theft?

How does it happen?

How can I protect myself?

How can I detect identity theft?

How do I report identity theft?

How is identity theft prosecuted?

How can I restore my credit standing?

What are the best Internet security programs I can use to protect my computer from cyber crime?

How can I detect online scams? And,

How can I protect my children from online predators and cyber-bullying?

This book provides Australians readers with proven solutions for all these problems. I trust that you will find the solution you need to solve your specific problem.

… And much, much more!

The Perfect Storm

After the 2007/2009 financial crash, governments used a variety of methods to bail out their failing financial institutions and investment banks. Now, a second financial crash threatens to engulf the world, starting with the PIIGS nations in Europe (i.e. Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece & Spain).

During the financial crash, many governments borrowed huge amounts of money to stimulate their economies and rebuild their banking systems. Now these same governments are deep in debt. The fear is that the next time round most governments will not be in a position to provide financial support for their banks.

Even more troubling, the IMF (International Monetary Fund) will not be capable of rescuing the increasing number of insolvent governments and their financial institutions. Fears of hyper-inflation will force governments to take an austerity path and reduce public debt. In the next five years, we could well see the advent of the second worldwide depression.

You may think my views are crazy or perhaps just that my imagination is way out of hand. At best, you may think that I don’t have access to the appropriate reality checks. Well think about this:

I am increasingly confident that fragile sovereign debt, bankruptcies and mass unemployment will drive a new crime wave and civil unrest across the world.

The globalization of the world economy through the Internet is under threat. Lax & inconsistent laws for Internet security will expose many unsuspecting users to the twin crimes of identity theft and cyber crime.

Many experts predict that unless urgent worldwide government action is taken NOW to regulate the Internet, within the next five years we will be headed for another perfect storm… this time it will include cyber space!

Cyber crime groups will join together to take over the Internet and target unprotected people and steal their identities. People will risk having their life savings stolen without their knowledge. Children will be at risk from pedophiles and cyber-bullying.

Cyber terrorists will threaten governments and businesses will face the risk of mass online fraud. People will lose confidence in the Internet and cease to use it.

Security will become the most important issue for the Internet in the next five years.

The circumstances immediately ahead are largely unprecedented. History is therefore only marginally useful as our guide to the future. We are now in genuinely unchartered territory… Headed for the Perfect Storm!

My Evil Twin

My name is Allen Cummings. This is a story about my “Evil Twin”…a real person whose real identity is still unknown. This is my story about how I became a victim of identity theft, not once but twice...the good, the bad and the downright ugly!
