Internet Computer Communications

The History of the Internet

As Leiner et al (2003) stated “The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before” Leiner et al, (2003).

The fact is the internet has been around for a long time and it has absolutely revolutionised the world of computing and communications like nothing before. A researcher by the name of Hafner et al (2003) stated that “no one owns the internet” and “no one actually runs it” Hafner et al 2003 (p. 3). Even though Hafner et al (2003) are correct in saying that no one “owns” or “runs” the internet, it still doesn't stop half a billion people in the world to rely on the Internet as they do for example, on the consumption of water.

The Internet is primarily, a source of information that can be used for anything. In the 20th century, it can include booking a flight/ train ticket or researching online journals or newspapers for a school assignment. However, in the early 1950s and 1960s, the internet was primarily used as a means of communication between specific stations on the network and most people didn't believe that the internet wouldn't last. Hafner et al (2003) researched and reported that “In the mid-1990's, a handful of doomsayers predicted that the internet would melt down under the strain of increased volume” Hafner et al 2003 (p. 3). Therefore, stating that the Internet would not be a success and would only last temporarily. However, one can say that the Internet has not succumbed to the negativity and is now a long lasting source for individuals to gather information and knowledge on particular topics such as that of political news or celebrity gossip.

The internet can also be deemed to be a vast virtual environment as when the Internet was introduced; it was known to only help those only of a certain age (adults) on particular problems. However, since the internet and modern civilisation has progressed over the years, it can be said that the average type of person to access the internet has also progressed over the years. This being children. The reason for this could be a substantial one. However, Varnhagen (2007) stated that the reason for why a vast amount of children, in particular, became interested in the internet could stem from the fact that “Children can access a wealth of information on subjects ranging from acne to zebras” and “sharing their experiences and interest while breaking down cultural barriers” Varnhagen (2007). Other reasons for why this could be is that children may prefer researching particular information such as ‘acne' on the internet as they may feel to read such information in solace rather than be ridiculed in asking for example, their peers or parents. However, even though the internets popularity has arrived since its creation in the 19th century, the dangers of ‘surfing the web' have also surfaced in the 20th century in comparison to the date of its creation. The dangers could stem from

Accessing unsuitable material, vulnerability to sexual predation, hate websites for example, websites aimed at hating particular people, identity theft and websites that encourage the act of terrorism.

Therefore I think that in the nearby future, the Internet will be successful but more measures will be taken in protecting individual's privacy and details such as for example their name.
