Information and communication technology (ICT) is an essential part of the contemporary world. Culture and society have to be adjusted to meet the challenges of the knowledge age. The evolution of ICT in general has brought about rapid technological, social, political, and economic transformation, which finally has eventuated into a network society organised around ICT (Castells, 1996).
Information and communications technology (ICT) is an umbrella term that refer to any communication device or application, encompassing: radio, television, cellular phones, computer and network hardware and software, satellite systems and so on, as well as the various services and applications associated with them, such as videoconferencing and distance learning (www.midmarket.techtarget.com).
United Nations Scientific ,Educational and cultural Organisation has also described ICT as the combination of the computer, telecommunication and media technologies. ICT in general term is the combination of the potentials of computer, telecommunication and electronic media using the digital technology. By the integration and implementation of ICT in Education, we can achieve an ICT based system in the Education sector. An ICT system is a collection of independent elements that combine to achieve a pre-determined objective. Some of the achievable objectives of ICT in education system are the use of ICT for distance learning, provides interactive sessions for students and other users, enhances individualized instruction, provides simulation ground which helps relate school experiences to working experiences, creates economic values for the students makes school more productive and efficient and reinforces teaching.
By noting some of these objectives, it is clear and obvious that ICT has an effect on the education sector of any nation, and so this project critically analysis at the importance and problems facing the integration and implementation of ICT and training in Nigerian Education for the promotion of information literacy and potentials in the country.
As a secondary source, the use of articles and journals were employed.
The Nigerian national policy on information technology was also reviewed in this project,as it is the most important factor towards achieving this project's goals.
ICT has a lot to contribute in the nation's economy and governance by enhancing the productivity of ICT tools and equipment such as software and hardware ,it also prepares the nation for global competitiveness, it helps to improve judicial procedures and enhances dispensation of justices, it helps the nation improve on its accessibility to public administration for all citizens, thereby bringing transparency to government processes, it helps a nation to get better on their food production and food security by the use of available resources on the web and food application software, it also help the nation to improve and foster their healthcare services using health related tools and software application, it also encourages national security and law enforcement. ICT has impacted on the quality and quantity of teaching, learning, and research in traditional and distance education institutions. By integrating ICT in Nigerian Education, it can boost teaching and learning through its vibrant interactive sessions, and engaging content, and can provide real opportunities for individualised instruction either formal or informal. Information and communication technology has the potential to hasten, improve and enhance skills, it motivates and engage students in learning, helps to simulate school experiences to work practices, helps to create economic viability for tomorrow's workers, contributes to radical changes in school, strengthens teaching, and provides opportunities for connection between the school and the world (Davis and Tearle, 1999; Lemke and Coughlin, 1998). Information and communication technology can make the school more efficient and productive, thereby engendering a variety of tools to enhance and facilitate teachers' professional activities (Kirschner and Woperies, 2003). A critcal review of the Nigerian policy on information technology shows that the policy is quite insufficient to inculcate positive impact on the nation's education system. The policy shows that the nation is more concern about the market opportunities which particularly is not positive to the implementation of ICT in the nation's education system. The national policy on information technology also places small amount of reference on the integration and implementation of information technology training in the nation's education system. This project also see the challenges of the integration of information technology, which are basically on the educational policy and planning, financing, infrastructure, capacity building ,language and content, and offers policy implications, and possible positive suggestions to ensure maximum use of information technology in Nigerian school system.
The objectives of this project are aimed at:
- To identify the problems facing ICT in the country.
- To the many problems facing implementation of ICT in school system.
- To integrate and merge information technology training into the mainstream of the nation's education system.
- To provide an information literate environment.
- To establish new multifaceted information training institutes in schools to be the centre of excellence so as to ensure the nation's competiveness in the international market.
- To develop and improve human capital with emphasis on creating and supporting knowledge based society.
- To provide good policy on Education and ICT.
The following deliverables are intended to be achieved by following the proper implementation of information technology in Nigerian schools, they are:
- A proper school-base ICT implementation model.
- A well structure of learning activity services.
- Proper support from parents.
- School culture that facilitates information literacy.
- A core ICT curriculum.
- Proper use of knowledge about information technology and information processing across school curricula.
- An information literate environment.
WHY ARE YOU INTERSTED IN THIS PROJECT
Having being to schools in united kingdom, I found out how the use ICT have so improved there way of learning and limits some problems with distance learning. With ICT being implemented and integrated in these schools in the UK. I noticed how effective interaction session can be, by students communicating with either tutors or students from same or other schools over some forums created on the internet and intranet so as to improve on their knowledge and research. Students in the UK can practically be self tutored by the use of software applications on the computers and this can make learning very interesting, efficient and effective. Some information can be communicated to students without gathering them on the schools' designed web sites, made accessible to all students, as this can prevent rushes, stampede, mad dashes by students or even the information not reaching the students at the right time and more so proper understanding of the given information. Assignments and assessments can also be viewed by the students too, which helps them as per students who came late to class or missed the entire class due to genuine reasons
