World War 2
The World War 2 is said to have started in 1939 and ended in 1945. It is considered to be the most expensive war of the twentieth century amounting to the expenses of at least a trillion dollars. The participation was also immense in which about 100 million military personnel contributed their participation in the war. It was the most dreadful war that killed about 70 million people. It triggered off with the Poland invasion by Germany and its declaring war on the allied countries like France, Britain and the United Kingdom. Hitler actually had his mid set on acquiring further land to expand Germany either by hook or crook. So, he staged a Polish attack on Germany to defend the Germany's counter attack. The war served to hide the Nazi atrocities (on the Jews in the concentration camps) and the holocaust sins of Hitler. As a result, the world found its leading super powers in the form of opposite poles of the countries Soviet Union and United States of America that made a perfect sitting for the cold war that lasted about fifty years.
Another trigger point of the World War 2 is said to be the attack on Pearl Harbor. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, United States of America declared war on first Japan and then three days later on Germany. On an average, about 150000 allied western soldiers exulted when they finally invaded Normandy (called as the greatest crusade by the general of the United States of America) in 1944 Thus; the Canadian, British and American allied troops marched into Normandy. It was in 1945 that Germany eventually surrendered. Hitler committed suicide and this heralded the end of the world war.
In order to step up the international peace efforts, finally the United Nations came into existence on 24 October, 1945. Fifty years o Cold war saw the superpowers create their own spheres of influence testing individual nuclear weapons. Even the formation of NATO and the Warsaw Pact did all to worsen the Cold War situation. Later on, the decolonization of European and the Soviet colonial powers came to the fore. Economic growth was slow but steady. Disease, genocide, malnutrition and massacres, all led to the death of the twenty million soldiers and forty million civilians. The prominent techno achievements of the World War 2 were the guided missiles, rockets and the world's first programmable computer.
Despite all the political angles working out the end, the blatant truth remains that the soldiers turned into barbarians. One shudders at seeing the photographs of the concentration camps run by the German Nazis to purposely exterminate the Jews. The war crimes have stirred many a Hollywood director to film the brutal atrocities done. The women were a far easy prey or the soldiers as compared to the men. The children were the worst sufferers and tied of plague and malnutrition like flies every other day. Those who tried to run never succeeded and brought back only to face another round of intensified tortures. Women prisoners were medically underweight and prone to all kinds of infections in the prison cells. Even years after the holocaust, the Nazis were searched to sentence them and judge them in the court of law. But these attempts never succeeded with one or two exceptions where they were sentenced to hang till death, such mercilessly they called out to their juniors ordering them to bring a fresh batch of prisoners and making them to stand in a line an then barking at them to shoot the Jews point blank. The World War 2 is, thus, a grim pointer to the loss of faith and trust of humanity.
