Trojan War Troy
The Trojan War is said have raged a good ten years from 1184-1194 B.C. It has aptly formed a sound basis for the Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, which depict the events of this great legendary war that influenced people in literature and art for centuries. It is envisaged that when Paris (prince of Troy) stole Helen from Menelaus (her husband and the King of Sparta), the Achaeans waged this war and laid siege the city for ten years. They mercilessly slaughtered the Trojans and desecrated the temples as well.
The legend of the Trojan War is that when a top goddess got furious over not being invited at a wedding, she created a golden apple that became a bone of contention between the three goddesses. It was instructed that the golden apple be consumed by only that Goddess who was the fairest of all the three. The three Goddesses, Athena, Hera and Aphrodite went to the Prince of Troy, Paris (the most beautiful man in the world) for resolving the dispute. Now Paris was bewitched by the beauty of Helen, who was the most beautiful woman. When Paris went to Sparta, he fell in love with Helen, though she was already married to Menelaus, the king. So Paris declared that the golden apple be given to Aphrodite as she was the most fair among the three. Aphrodite, in return, made Helen fall in love with Paris. Paris eventually abducted Helen and took her to Troy. Some historical sources point that Helen may have gone of her free will and also took much of the wealth of her husband along with her.
It is said that Menelaus anticipated that some event of this kind may occur as the beautiful Helen had many suitors before marriage. So, Menelaus had made the old suitors sign a decree (when he married Helen) that all shall back the Achaeans in case a situation like this occurred. Odyssey and Achilles were the initial suitors of Helen, who had to fight on behalf of Menelaus when he and his brother led the army from upfront for the Trojan War.
The end of the Trojan War is signaled by the arrival of the Trojan horse. Actually, the war showed no signs of ending despite heavy casualties on both the sides. So, the horse was basically built by Odyssey with the help of the goddess Athena. It was omen of ill luck but was a perfect beauty from the outside. It was a large wooden horse ordered by Odyssey to gain an entrance into Troy. The horse was hollow from inside and all the Greek soldiers from the army hid inside the hollow of the horse. The rest of the Greek fleet sailed away and the Trojans were tricked into believing that the war was over. They seized the beautiful horse and despite repeated warnings from so many Trojan warriors, took the horse with much fan fare and celebration inside the city of Troy via the gates. In the frenzied madness and drunken stupor of victory celebrations, the Trojans were immersed in deep sleep. An Achaean spy, who had maintained a vigil all through, gave a sign to the Greek soldiers in the clear moon midnight to come out of the hollow of the horse. The fleet came out and the war again started. A lot of confused Trojans were caught unawares as they did not know what struck them, still thy fought bravely till the end but were ultimately wiped out by the Greek army that massacred the sleeping population throughout the day.
The events of the Trojan War led ultimately to the fall of the city and death of Paris, the prince of Troy. Menelaus had plans of killing Helen as well but failed to do so in front of her mesmerizing beauty. He broke his sword he had drawn to kill his former wife and ultimately seduced her and took her to the ships.
