Battle Stalingrad Germans

Battle of Stalingrad

November 19th-22nd, 1942

The Battle of Stalingrad was a major turning point for the Germans and the Soviets in World War Two. When Japan fought the Battle of Midway it put them on defense, just as the Battle of Stalingrad did to the Germans. The Battle left the Germans in a full retreat. The reason for the Germans to attack Stanlingrad was because it was the center for communications and manufacturing in the Soviet Union. The Battle was fought between the Germans and The Soviets.

The German army was led by Paulus, had 1,011,500 men, 10, 290 artillery guns, 675 tanks, and 1,216 planes. The Russian army was led by Zhukov, had 1,000,500 men, 13,541 artillery guns, 894 tanks, and 1,115 planes.

The Battle of Okinawa

June 21st, 1945

The Battle of Okinawa was the largest amphibious battle of the Pacific War. More ships were used, troops, supplies, naval guns, and more people died than any other battle and including the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There were 38,000 Americans hurt and 12,000 were killed or missing. For the Japanese casualties were more extensive and took a toll on the Japanese army.

In addition to being the largest amphibious invasion, it was also the bloodiest battle. There were more than 34 allied ships that were sunk by Japanese kamikazes. Kamikazes were Japanese soldiers that would execute a suicidal crash to take down a plane or sink an enemy ship. The Japanese had 110,755 soldiers that were captured as prisoners and or surrendered. They also had 7,539 soldiers that were killed and 23,764 soldiers and civilians that were either buried in caves or underground. As the final loss, Japan lost 7,830 aircrafts and 16 combat ships.

Nazi's Occupy Kiev (Capital of Ukraine)

September 19th, 1941

During September of 1941, the Nazis occupied the capital of the Ukraine, Kiev. When the Germans arrived they were greeted by the people of Kiev because they believed that the Germans would set them free of Stalin's oppressive rule. As soon as the Germans arrived in Kiev, looting started. By the time that started the Germans had moved to Kiev's downtown. On September 24th, 5 days after the Germans had arrived, a bomb went off at the German headquarters. The German soldiers were shocked. Right after the Germans started to gather people as suspects, just as another bomb exploded and destroyed a building. Everyone , including the Germans fled for safety.

The bombings continued for many days and killed lots of German soldiers and Kiev civilians. All of the bombings ceased on September 28th. The Germans posted a notice to all Jews in Kiev.

All Jews living in the city of Kiev and it's vicinity are to report by 8 o' clock on the morning of Monday, September 29th, 1941, at the corner of Melnikovsky and Dokhturov Streets (near the cemetery). They are to take with them documents, money, valuables, as well as warm clothes, underwear, etc. Any [Jew] not carrying out this instruction and who is found elsewhere will be shot. Any civilian entering flats evacuated by [Jews] and stealing property will be shot”

Most Jews believed that this just thought this meant deportation, but they were sadly mistaken. On the morning of September 29th, all the Jews showed up to where they were directed.

When the Jews reached the huge mass of people the soldiers took them into a corridor in groups of only ten. In the corridor they were beaten severely by the soldiers with sticks. After, the Jews were told to undress and beat even more by soldiers who enjoyed watching the Jews suffer. As the Jews reached their final stage they feared what would happen. They were brought to huge ravine called Babi Yar, where they were shot and killed. During this time there were more than 100,000 Jews killed at Babi Yar.

London Suffers First Air Blitz

September 7th, 1940

During World War Two there were many kinds of attacks on Great Britain, but the most memorable were probably the air attacks, also known as air blitzes. The initial air blitz was conducted by the First German Air force. It was planned to destroy the Royal Air force in Great Britain, in the summer of 1940. Most of the air raids were aimed at industrial areas and docklands in the East end of London.

For the first few weeks of air blitzes the only occurred in the day. The Germans switched to only night raids because they were losing to many bombers during the day. The problem for Britain was that they didn't have any night time defense from the bombs. The antiaircraft guns did little to protect and the RAF (Royal Air Force) didn't help at all.

Continually, every night there were tons of bombs. On an average there were from 100 to 200 bombers who dropped 200 tons of high explosives and 300 incendiaries. The raids continued with more than 300 and 400 planes with twice as many bombs. Families sent their children to the countryside to live with relatives so they could be safe from the high explosive bombs.

After tons of air raids, people got used to them. They would continue with whatever they were doing at the time like reading, cooking, or listening to the radio. The nightly air blitzes finally became a part of life for the people of Britain, and after they ended life got even easier.

D-day

June 6th, 1944

On the morning of June 6th, 1944, 160,000 troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. They crossed the narrow strip of ocean between England and France to defeat the Nazis and put an end to all of the hystereity. The invasion involved over 156,000 troops from England and the United States.

D-day is a very commonly used war term. It is used to distinguish a day of invasion or attack. Even though it is commonly used this is by far the most memorable. I think that this day is, and will be the most memorable day in American history of World War Two.

Bombing of Hiroshima

August 6th, 1945

On August 6th, 1945, an American bomber dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in Japan. That one atomic bomb was the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT. It flattened the city and killed tens of thousands of people. It was the most devastating bomb dropped in that time.

This bombing was not based on a military base, as usual bombings are. That bomb killed many women, children, men, and soldiers. Hiroshima's population was estimated (before bomb) at 350,000 people. 70,000 of those people died instantly from the explosion. Within the next five years, another 70,000 people died from radiation poisoning.

From the bomb two thirds of the city had been flattened. Within a three mile radius there were 60,000 of the 90,000 buildings crumbled on the ground. The clay roof tiles melted together and much other destruction was present. Three days after the bombing in Hiroshima, we dropped another bomb. This time it was on the city of Nagasaki, also in Japan.
