Kaiser Daily Baby
Kaiser's Baby Daily Center
Kaiser Permanente serves the health care needs of 8.4 million members in nine US states. Nationwide the organization includes approximately 90,000 technical, administrative and clerical employees and about 11,000 physicians.
Medical device connectivity is the integration of medical devices with information systems, which automates the workflow surrounding the medical device. This workflow automates data analysis or acquires and communicates data generated by devices to other information systems or users. Kaiser Permanente is on the cutting edge of both software applications and hardware POC devices.
It implemented a new software called the Daily baby Center. Kaiser Permanente, the largest integrated health delivery organization in the United States has implemented Site of Care Systems' Daily Baby Center clinical information system into their NICU. Site of Care Systems is a state of the art suite of data management tools for perinatal and neonatal healthcare providers, designed to optimize clinical and financial outcomes, improve productivity, and simplify data-driven clinical decision making.
The NICU will provide full newborn services to its Northern California member base. The Daily Baby Center module will covers a continuum of care from antepartum testing, labor and deliver, neonatal intensive care, and high-risk follow-up. The system is designed to collect comprehensive data on all phases of labor and birthing events. Due to the variety and complexity of conditions relevant to patients in NICU, these patients experience frequent transitions from the regular nursery to NICU settings. These frequent transitions across the continuum of care represent “risk points” at which important clinical information may not be transmitted or may be transmitted incorrectly, creating gaps in quality and opportunities for error. The upgrade Health information exchange software has the potential to reduce errors and improve quality of care.
The unique infrastructure of the Daily Baby Center technology employs a relational database that links baby and maternal records. This allows clinicians to seamlessly connect pertinent newborn clinical information to relevant maternal medical history, including medical information for all prior or subsequent deliveries. The system interfaces directly with the hospital's registration and lab system reducing data entry errors and streamlining physician workflow. Handheld PDAs, smart phones and tablet PCs are an ideal use of technology for providing instant mobile access to general and specialty reference titles, clinical and drug-dosing calculators, ICD-9 coding, treatment guidelines and other decision support solutions offered within the Daily Baby Center. All POC devices used by Kaiser are updateable via a desktop or wireless Internet connection. The System also has the functionality to export pertinent clinical data to a hospital's enterprise wide data repository.
The System is utilized by physicians and nurse practioners to generate admission H & P's, daily progress notes, discharge summaries, logbooks, and extensive automated reports. Clinical information entered into Daily Baby Center is stored in a large relational database. The granular data collected in the System can be easily accessed and utilized for daily documentation, process improvement, bench-marking, evidence-based medicine, quality initiatives, out-come review, and much more. The software collects data directly from Kaiser Permanente's registration and lab systems though an industry standard HL7 interface, reducing data entry errors and streamlining physician workflow. Furthermore, pertinent data is automatically exported to the hospital's data repository to help create a centralized Electronic Health Record. Site of Care is an important strategic selection for Kaiser Permanente.
The physicians and nurse practitioners enjoy significant time savings through the automation of daily medical documentation that Daily Baby provides. In addition, being able to have such flexible access to the data for ad hoc queries and searches will be very useful as they monitor quality and utilization of care.
