Edward R. Mercer: Induction into the Environment Hall of fame
Edward R. Mercer, a street person and a millionaire by the age of 27, is one of the largest builders in Costa Rica. Ed Mercer came to Costa Rica with his wife as a guest around 1988. But as destiny would have it, he instantly fell in love with the natural beauty of the country and the bewitchment was so great that he decided to make one of the breathtaking spectacular island of Costa Rica his home for life. His entrepreneurship skills and the hard working philosophy of “commit less, deliver more” were perfect for the laying down of his real estate company, all the developments of which are standardized as per the strict environmental parameters. Thus, the environmental issues have been very dear to his heart from a long period of time. The journey into the prestigious Environmental hall of Fame as a result spanned many a decade and was not just a fluke.
Edward R. Mercer was inducted into the Environmental Hall of Fame by sheer dint of his achievements in the field of dynamic efforts done in order to preserve ecology and wild life of Costa Rica. The induction ceremony was performed in Westin Lax Theater, Museum in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony was inaugurated by the Father of the solar panels, a 25 patent holder, Stan Ovshisk, who cut the ribbon for the inauguration.
Ed Mercer was recognized for his supreme efforts at conserving the biodiversity of his region. The Costa Rican island on which he resides is called as the Ilsa Garza. Since he has already made Costa Rica his home, he was much perturbed by the issues of every day killings of the Scarlet Macaws, the island Monkeys as well as the stealing of the turtle eggs. Ed Mercer, with his wife, got to observe closely these deep irregularities of the system which were besieged by a threat of slow extinction of the concerned species in this manner if remedial measures were not taken up soon. Immediately, he and his wife decided to take the initiative themselves.
They saw that just for the sake of selling their feathers, poachers used to kill the Scarlet Macaws on the island of Costa Rica. For the sake of aphrodisiacs (that fetched a highly lucrative price in the foreign market), the eggs of the turtle were being blatantly stolen on the island. Similarly, the poachers used to set up a trap for the mother monkeys and kill them. They performed these ghastly killings of the mothers in order to take their babies away easily without any hindrance. Later on, they used to sell them at high prices to the public which needed them as the pet monkeys for the purpose of recreation and feeding them at home.
The first immediate preventive measure Mercer took was to set up a beef up security plan whereby he got various security guards posted at the strategic points (used generally by poachers to make an illegal entry) on the island for the perpetual and everlasting safety of the wild life and the hunted animals. Secondly, they planted lots and lots of almond trees. It is the favorite food of Scarlet Macaws along with attracting hordes of birds whose population naturally increased by breeding. Similarly, there was a significant increase in the population of the monkeys as well with the actual figure running into the thousands. The turtle count also increased significantly in direct proportion to the stopping of the illegal poaching effectively.
Thus Ed mercer was successfully inducted into the Environmental Hall of Fame for completely altering the island Ilsa Garza into a protected reserve.
