Scripps Expedition Reef
Article Title: Scripps Expedition Provides New Baseline for Coral Reef Conservation
The Scripps institution of Oceanography has conducted an expedition first thought to be very farfetched before. The expedition has in fact discovered new knowledge and information about the state of reefs in the four atolls in the Line Islands. It has provided an in-depth view of the impacts of human activity to the organisms living in the area.
The products of the expedition are published in a Public Library of Science (PLoS) journal. The journal took note of the food web characterized in the Line Islands. It has also compared the effects of increasing human impacts with those from other reefs. The paper describes the smallest to the biggest organism the expedition have uncovered. The other paper focuses on the microorganisms present in the ecosystem. These organisms are important to determine the association of microbes to the worldwide degradation of reefs.
The discovery of healthy reefs has brought the oceanographers a sigh of relief. It has been proven that local protection can make reefs resilient to the impacts of global change. It was concluded that healthy reefs have the chance of recovering highly from climate change.
