Nineteen Eighty-Four
The book starts out in London, Oceania which is a fictitious super state comprised of many different parts of today's real world countries. The main plot of this novel is a never-ending war between the three super nations of the Earth. Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia are the three “mega powers” of this book. This war is basically unwinnable, “and that its only purpose is to use up human labor and the fruits of human labor so that each super state's economy cannot support an equal (and high) standard of living for every citizen,” as explained by Orwell.
Winston Smith, the protagonist of the play, is at the bottom of the “Party's” social class. Thought he works for them he also despises what they do and stand for. The Party is a one hundred percent controlling dictatorship. They have cameras and televisions in every house and all over town and inside his home the leader the “Big Brother,” watches over. This party controls everything from the history of the super state to the language. One of the more important ideas in this book is the language, called “Newspeak,” which is designed with now words relating to political rebellion.
Smith obviously opposes this government and becomes interested in the “Brotherhood,” an anti-party group, and a man called O'Brien. Winston's job involves him changing historical records for Oceania, to fit their needs. While working there he notices a younger girl named Julia. They later become involved in an affair, and since sex is illegal, this is a major crime. O'Brien calls them into his luxury home and just as quick as they step in they realize he is a spy working for the Party. Winston is tortured for his crime and unfortunately learns to love the Big Brother.
Similar to Fahrenheit 451, Winston Smith works for the very thing he despises the most, like Montag in his job. They both work for government sponsored programs that aim at hurting the economy and people. Also, both protagonists meet girls, both younger, who help them fight for their cause, and forget about the government, though Montag escapes while Smith is forced to conform to the mainstream for the rest of his life.
