One story that seemed to involve all of the cultural traits of the Celts was the story of Deirdre. Everything that the Celts stood for was mentioned in the story. The Celts were a very interesting group of people that are really not talked about at all in today's world. They did a lot of sacrificing and their religious beliefs were questionable. Everyone thought that they were of Irish descent. Historians found evidence of them by finding medieval writings, comments from writers on the culture, and monuments that were found in Britain. There was a lot of things that the Celts did back then that were not socially acceptable now or then.
One of the cultural traits of the society was how they thought everyone's head needed to split open after they died. The Celts thought their souls were trapped in their body until their skull was split open so that it would be released to make it to heaven. When they began to attack the Celts had the advantage by being able to swing up with their weapons, which is much easier to hit than aiming down. They did not have as many people as most other armies, but they were relentless in their fighting styles and that is what helped them live as long as they did. That is how the Celts fought as a society and it shows how that they battled as a society.
Another thing the Celts did as a society was how they were a male dominated society. The way that they used women was not a way that any country should choose to do. The wives had to do everything that their husbands told them to do whether they worked on the farm or cooking dinner when they came inside. The women were put in a terrible position by not being able to marry the person that they wanted to. Deirdre was an example, she absolutely hated being married to her husband, and she hated it so much that when she was caught with another man that she took her first opportunity to kill herself when a boulder came by. Societies have always seemed to work better when women and men have considered themselves equal. In America everything is equal opportunity for men and women and it is the most successful country in the world. All women want is to feel wanted and useful doing something whether it is working on the farm or washing clothes and cooking dinner or having another job. If every society realized this then everything would be better and there would be less tension all the time.
These cultural traits showed one of the more interesting societies of our time. The Celtic people were one of a kind in many different ways which means that we as a country do need to learn from history so that we are not doomed to make the same mistakes. America has learned a lot of things by the Celts mistakes. The mistake of fixed marriages the way they fought and the way they treated women was not something people should model a civilization after. One thing that America did take from the Celtic people was the holiday of Halloween came from the Celtic people because of the Christian influence that had finally changed them. The Roman culture had to team up with the Germans who were becoming more populated throughout the world to destroy the Celts and they could no longer stand up to that many people.
