The Trilingual The Bilingual And The American English Language Essay
A country without its pasts is like a person without an identity. History does not only functions in telling us about the past but it also helps us to comprehend the present and foreseeing what will happen in the future. The fundamentals on which history is constructed, are facts and evidences that are developed by historians who create the historical records. There are some distinguish between historical evidences which are derived from the primary and secondary sources.
In order to allege that we know something, we must first define how we know it. There are four widely accepted ways of acquiring knowledge, through our senses and observation, through reasoning and logic, through authority and finally through intuition and revelation. However in order to acquire, produce and communicate knowledge, we need the uses of language.
The roles of language in history have various importances. This is because history is recorded and presented to people through many kinds of different language. The reason is also an important factor in history; which with a certain reasoning historian create a historical record of certain event in a certain way. There could be bad reasoning and problems of bias in history. In this essay, the roles of language and reason in history will be explained further as we go on.
Based on Wikipedia, language can be defined as a system of signs, indices, icons and symbols for encoding and decoding information. Since language and languages became an object of study by the ancient grammarians, the term has had many and different definitions. The English word derives from Latin lingua with means language or tongue. The ability to use speech was originated in remote prehistoric times, as did the language families were in use at the beginning of writing.
Besides that, on the past famous histories, the world knew that language was used as a medium to communicate, not only among ourselves but also with animals. Not to mention making agreements between people of different races, countries and religions. Our ancestors used to communicate with a system called the “call system”. It was like that until the human language developed to what it is nowadays: a tool that allows us to discuss about the past and the future, to express feelings, exchange ideas and experiences. Even though there are a lot of languages used, it will eventually come down to one basic communication which everybody agrees to i.e. English.
Moreover, the roles of languages in history are to help in expressing the association between words and things for which they stand for. We give a name to everything we see, feel, and hear. Symbols also are incorporated in human language, for example in Mathematics. Different kinds of symbols are used but it is universally understood around the globe. The purpose of why language exists was for mankind to understand each other and to create a better world. I know that these kinds of things, we may not find it anywhere in history books or journals, but when we actually used language that is comprehended by everyone; a lot of things are been solved without any bloodshed.
Apart from that, language is also considered as a scientific pattern. Those patterns can be found anywhere if you care to look for them, physically, mentally and even spiritually. In history, the events which are unfortunate or the other way around tells us about what really happened in the past. The past that created the present are transmitted through language. These languages explained those events so that lessons are learnt from it. Not only just lessons, but also we would not repeat it.
A leader once said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. From this saying, it clearly implies that those who used to be a part of an event and do not take any actions or lessons from it, they will eventually repeat the same thing all over again. The roles of language are performed when people are expressing their feelings or opinion on something. The great leaders of the world communicate among themselves through language. Languages are the gear that unites them together. An old saying once said “A great leader would only be able to get to someone’s head using the language that they understand. But to get to someone’s heart, a great leader has to speak using their own language”.
However, most people in the world are multilingual, and everybody could be. No one is rigorously excluded from another's language community except through lack of time and effort. Different languages protect and nourish the growth of different cultures, where different pathways of human knowledge can be discovered. They certainly make life richer for those who know more than one of them. Knowing about the history through other language helps us to attain a much deeper meaning in something that is hard to express in our own native language. By this, history is not only taken seriously but something is actually learnt from it so that the future generations will not repeat the same mistakes made.
Moreover, all of our thought processes are conducted in languages, so really our entire existence or essence or soul, however we phrase it, is inextricably bound up to and with the languages we speak. Try to think how are able to comprehend our own history without language for instance. However, we can only see that the language is in essence superficially, since many languages exist. To understand the true roots of our thought processes or the real nature of the human soul, knowledge of several languages may be necessary. Not only for our learning, but also for the future generations to be aware of the little things in history that people do not really take into account.
Sometimes, as a teen, we wished we were someone else. In terms of been born and living in various different countries, so that we will appreciate the beauty of our own history. Learning a foreign language helps us understand our own language and culture better through comparison, or through the relationship between the foreign language and our mother tongue. History will not only be understandable but also it will be easier for our learning process in schools and university. Not to mention, also in our daily lives. As a famous historian once quoted:
“Wer fremde Sprachen nicht kennt, weiß nichts von seiner eigenen”
(Those who know no foreign language knows nothing of their mother tongue)
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)
Form the saying above, to better understand about the rest of the human kind, language is an aspect of humanity, and learning what a fellow human speaks teaches you more about what is human kind as a whole. The more languages you know, the more you understand our species, history and that is beneficial no matter what the situation is. The history written by the historians tells us about the human kinds. Different countries may have different versions of our own history. No wonder it is not a shock that languages are used to make things comprehendible for everyone.
History has helped us come a long way especially in making a country proud. The country would be nothing if language does not exists. These languages helped these countries to grow and develop, moving on from their past histories and learning valuable things that we rarely get in our daily lives. These languages influenced culture, so learning languages helped us to understand how other people think, and it also helps you to get a general understanding of our world and the many people and cultures that inhabit it.
The reasons for having language in history are so that we are able to learn not only different languages, but also the message that is tried to being delivered to us. it's all the different ways people express themselves, and it shows that there really are other people out there. It’s also a way to learn how people interact and socialize with each other, and how each society works. Languages to me, is much more than making me able to communicate with others in history, but also for my deeper understanding of the meanings in history. To me it's like getting some nice new surprise and a whole new level of understanding.
Apart from that, the reason of the existence of language in history are to express things that is difficult to express in your native language especially when it comes around about history, as it is quite a work. But learning a foreign language can provide you with ways to talk about things that might be difficult to express in your own language. It's also a way to get in touch with others that ourselves.
In history, it is better for us to understand it through our own language .In order to learn it in another language; we need to learn the different titles and functions of sentence parts. Learning these things can make us a better individual and a more articulate person. Also, many of the root words used in foreign vocabulary will help us later on as we struggle to comprehend or analyze new words in our own native language.
Therefore, language, in the absence of translation, comprises a barrier to a worldwide community of debate and opinion, although it is also true that media within any given society may be split along class, political or regional lines. Furthermore, if the language is translated, the translator has room to shift a bias by choosing weighed words for translation.
Many media theorists concerned with language and media bias point towards the media of the United States, a large country where English is spoken by the vast majority of the population. Some theorists argue that the common language is not homogenizing; and that there still remain strong differences expressed within the mass media. This viewpoint asserts that moderate views are bolstered by drawing influences from the extremes of the political spectrum. In the United States, the national news therefore contributes to a sense of cohesion within the society, proceeding from a similarly informed population. According to this model, most views within society are freely expressed, and the mass media are accountable to the people and tends to reflect the spectrum of opinion.
