Corlew's Congregation Lobby
Corlew Hall is located near the middle of campus and provides easy access to the post office, the library, classrooms, and food service. The home to a large majority of first year students this dorm helps create the skyline of Middle Tennessee State University's campus at seven stories high. This dormitory consists of one room doubles for both males and female occupants that split the building three floors a piece. Also the dormitory contains a spacious lobby that boasts a big screen television; multiple, relaxing, heavily-cushioned lounge chairs; a computer lab; a friendly help desk; two tutoring rooms; and the resident director's office. Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary defines the word “lobby” as “a corridor or hall connected with a larger room or series of rooms and used as a passageway or waiting room.” The words “waiting room” are a large understatement of how most college students make use of this particular dorm's lobby. These facts lead me to want to observe the lobby and ask the questions, “Who are these people, and what are they doing in Corlew's Lobby?”
After finishing the exhausting early morning classes, the normally noise-filled lobby begins the quiet down as ten o'clock rolls around because this signal means that the ritual television show, The Price is Right, is about to begin. While eating McCallie Cafeteria's morning breakfast, reviewing study notes for one's upcoming classes, and finishing up last minute homework, the college students all simultaneously look up from their own worlds to capture a piece of a type of community involvement. Yelling aloud answers to the game show's questions and joking with friends are ways that these some students clear their mind for another challenging day of college curriculum. This type of relaxing atmosphere carries on throughout the afternoon as the television shows help set the mood of the large monstrous crowd especially while on the famous Black Entertainment Television network as the daily top ten best music videos count down unravels. The fun usually never ends there, it normally continues throughout the night, sometimes progressing into the early morning of the next day. Card games, childish horse-playing and even the occasional movie night seemingly take an immense occupation of the lobby dweller's time.
Shockingly enough sophomores, juniors, and even seniors choose Corlew's lobby, a freshman lobby, as a popular hangout spot. This makes me question why upperclassmen would want to spend their time with freshmen. “Is it the more easily persuaded younger women or the easily influenced young men that would cause the attendance of upperclassmen?” Or, “Could this year's freshmen class possess the ultimate coolness to attract any and everybody?” I am not sure what it is, but whatever is going on tends to attract a proportion of outsiders.
It is a great thing to have a mixing of cultures and ideals throughout a college's community. Middle Tennessee State University is the largest school in the state and is comprised of many different nationalities, and each student should take full advantage of learning from their peers and professors. After spending countless hours observing Corlew's lobby I cannot decide on one main reason that everyone wants to spend their free time in the lobby. There are numerous answers to this question that cannot be summed up with any one answer. I just hope that the people that live in the Corlew's Hall dorm rooms and those that come from near and far all make the best out of this wonderful environment.
I think that the observation of Corlew's lobby is interesting because freshmen have spent a lot of their college hang-out time there and planned on spending several more over the rest of the semester. I take a great deal of interest in fitting in with my peers and trying to figure out why we do the things we do. The people of Corlew's lobby have become a close knit family over last semester and thought out this semester. Of course we argue and fight, as if we were brothers and sisters, but we also stand up for one another against outsider. While taking trips to the mall, lazar tag, clubs, and even the movies we bond tighter then any other organization on campus. These people of Corlew's lobby go by no other name than “The Corlew Crew.”
