Child Sentence Fall
Analysis of Children's Language
Children's speech changes as they grow and these are 3 examples at different ages:
21 months
At this age, a child can say two or three word sentences which are just really the nouns. They start to use prepositions, for example, in the sentence “In garden fall down”.
The mother knows what the child is talking about and actually says the sentence in full for the child in her reply, prompting her. This is also helping the child to hear the sentence as he should say it. He's using his limited vocabulary to get his mother's attention to come and see something.
The syntax they use is inverted, for example, “Fall-down daddy”, rather than Daddy has fallen down” and “Daddy-knee sore”. They know the words but not where they should fall within a sentence.
3 Years
Now the sentences become longer and easier to understand, but there is a misuse of pronouns. An example of this is the sentence “Hester be fast asleep” rather than “Hester is fast asleep”.
However, it becomes easier for them to get in the sentence, the subject, the verb and the object. If you look at the sentences “And why did her have two sweets Mummy?” where there is another misuse of a pronoun, and “Daddy didn't give me two in the end”.
In this speech, the child is using his use of language to understand the situation with the sweets and is also able to correct himself when he knows he's wrong, but he has tried to be clever to obtain extra sweets but it has backfired!
5 Years 6 months
Now the child wants to get into role play because they want to do the same things that adults do, as it makes them feel grown up to.
In this speech the child is stating the role that they want to play and telling the adult what they are going to do, they don't ask them. This is shown in the sentence “I'll be the waitress and you have to eat in my shop. You come in and sit down, and I can come and see you”. This is because they've seen this happen and that's the way they want it so the adult must do as they say.
They then say things that they have heard adults say in the same scenario, for example “Good afternoon”, showing that the child knows how to initiate the conversation between a waiter and a customer. However, they don't always get it correct. When Lucy is taking the order from her dad she says “O.K Bye” They are advanced enough to attempt this but not advanced enough to know when to use the words in the correct situation.
