Comparison And Contrast With Nuclear Power And Wind Engineering Essay
In present day, the problem of lack of energy recourses have became a serious problem. Since then fossil fuel still playing an important role on the society lives which irreplaceable. The fossil energy was overused in the period of the industrial revolution. Therefore, the amount of fossil energy decreased rapidly, which leads to this traditional energy which is hard to support the development of society and industry in the following century. Because of the excessive consumption of energy, finding the renewable energy becomes necessary. The application of nuclear power and wing energy increase the rate of the development of renewable energies and these energies have its own benefits which can decrease the level of air pollution. Thus, the renewable energy beginning to influenced in people’s daily life. These green powers have been instead of the traditional energy, including nuclear, solar energy, wind energy, wave energy and geothermal energy. Nuclear power and wind energy are the most popular renewable energy. The air pollution which is produce by the industrial revolution has influenced people’s health for a long time. This comparison between nuclear power and wind energy will find out the similarities in area of how to produce electric power and environmental conditions, while the difference in area of waste and the safety.
Nuclear power and wind energy have similar method to produce electrical power. In the nuclear power station, there are three parts, the nuclear reactors, the turbines and the generators. Nuclear Fission is the major process to produce electrical power. This process will repeat and produce huge energy and heat. As a result, the heat which produced by the fission will heat the water and transfer it into steam which is able to drive the turbines. The spin of the turbines will drive the generators which produce electrical power. On the other hand, wind energy does not need any physical transformation; natural wind is the only energy needed. The process to produce electrical power is similar. The spin of the turbines, the kinetic energy of spin will drive the generator to produce it. All in all, both of them have similar process to produce power; both of them are produce electrical power by the generators.
Nuclear power and wind energy have similar constraints in the process of construction; both of them are influenced by the geography. During the work time of the nuclear reactors, it needs plenty of water to be coolant to keep working normally. Therefore, the station must build close to the river or lake. If the river of lake far away the power station, it will lead to increase the cost in water transportation and become inefficient. In contract, suitable location can better satisfy the power requirement for the generating equipments. In terms of wing energy, the premise of wind energy is able to work that the turbines build on a suitable place where good quality of air flow has (Wind power program, 2006). It’s obviously that wind energy rely on geography conditional, the wind power generators must build in the place where can support large mount of wind. This is the premise of the wind power generators to work efficiently. In short, both of them cannot build without think about geography conditional.
In spite of the similarities, nuclear power and wing energy are different in some aspects. Although the nuclear power just produces a little waste, it is the most dangerous waste in the world. There is well-known that, the waste from nuclear power station is radioactive material. This material can divide into three categories, high-level waste, intermediate-level waste and low-level waste (United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 2010). These waste materials must be caution. If the radioation waste escapes, it will lead to environmental disaster. Burn the nuclear waste deeply in the earth is the major method to disposal it. In transportation, the wastes will storage in some special solid which has stable structure to resist the bombardment of the α-particles. In terms of wing energy, it is one of the renewable energies which it does not produce waste. The source of wind energy is wind, produced by the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the solar energy (Wind power program, 2006). Wind power is the cleanest energy in the world.
Another difference exists in the safety problem between the nuclear power and wind energy. Wind power station use mechanical theory to produce electrical power. The safety problem just exists in routine maintenance in electrical grid and the mechanical. Whether the wind system produces electrical power or not is the only thing that the engineers need to worry about. On the other hand, the safety problem must be concentrating on and cannot be ignore in nuclear power station. Even though it just has little problem when it is working, it still has grave dangerous that will lead to disaster. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in 1984 had shown that the significance of safety is the best evidence to prove nuclear power safety. An advanced safety system for nuclear power is responsible to everyone who is living on the earth.
In conclusion, both of these two energies are contribute positive influence to the environment. They do not produce smoke and greenhouse gas, it is less influence for the air pollution. In the future, people prefer to pay more tax to the government to build nuclear power station and wind energy system than pay more to solve the pollution problem. Therefore, using renewable energy is in line of interests of the people and it will protect the future for next generation.
