Using Axia's Educational Resources
Myresource.phoenix.edu/Gen 105 Appendix E
- Downloading files for use on your machine or portable device
To locate these files, I go to the universities home page. At the top of the home page, it'll list Home, Classroom, Library, Program and next to that Account. Click on Library and under library it'll list University Library, Center for Writing Excellence and Center for Mathematics Excellence.
- Navigating the University Library
The University Library is not only better than going to the local library; its special feature is "Ask a Librarian." This feature is very detailed in its navigation, but easy. I find the "Ask a Librarian" tool on the left side of your screen, under the Library bar at the top of your screen. When going into "Ask a Librarian," you type in your first and last name, your "Axia College Affiliation," and class information. All results will return within 48 hours
- Identifying key information within articles
There are six key characteristics in an article search to identify when looking for resources:
1. Keywords used
2. Indication of peer review
3. Article author(s)
4. Article publication date
5. Database Name
6. Article Title
Upholding Academic Honesty
https://ecampus.phoenix.edu/secure/aapd/grammar/plagiarism.asp
o Understanding Axia's academic honesty policy
Axia's academic honesty policy focuses on the Student Code of Academic Integrity which entails plagiarism and appropriate behavior. This code was made to protect the ideas and thoughts of the individual students. The code can be found on the Center of Writing for Excellence website, which list seven forms of academic dishonesty:
1. Plagiarism
2. Self-plagiarism, double dipping, or dovetailing
3. Fabrication
4. Unauthorized Assistance
5. Copyright Infringement
6. Misrepresentation
7. Collusion
Understanding consequences of plagiarism
Plagiarism is a very serious offense and the consequences are very severe. The consequences for plagiarism would entail, the student earning a zero, having the offense filed as a first offense, writing an essay on why plagiarism is wrong and finally, within in 48 hours, taking the CWE Avoiding Plagiarism tutorial. A repeat offense would result in the student being dropped from the class, scoring a grade of an “F.” Plagiarism is stressed by Axia as being dishonest because it comes with serious consequences and repercussion. Plagiarizing isn't only an immoral act to commit; it's not fair to students who do not commit plagiary.
Avoiding plagiarism
Fortunately, for us Axia students, there's a tool located under the Center of Writing Excellence to help students avoid plagiarism. This tool is called the Plagiarism Checker. To use the plagiarism checker I simply save my work under Microsoft Word, or as I would do an attachment, and I check back for the results to find out if I may have accidentally plagiarized on the paper.
Setting and Achieving Goals
Gen105 course syllabus.pdf/ myresource.phoenix.edu
o Identifying long- and short-term educational and career goals
Identifying long and short term goals shouldn't just be applied for career and educational purposes, but also personal reasons. Skills are what help me figure out my goals. Understanding my own skills is the deciding factor of my educational and career goals. Once I decided my career of choice, the next step is to map out the educational steps I'm going to take to reach that career.
o How to reach goals despite obstacles
The best way to reach my goals despite the obstacles is having an action plan. To develop an action plan, one should take these four steps:
1. Identify long term goals
2. Break down long term goals into short term goals
3. List specific deadlines for each short term goal
4. Prioritize each goal
5.
o How an Axia degree relates to goals
For Axia students, an Axia degree is their long term educational goal. The best way to break down getting an Axia degree is to focus on timing and setting daily goals. An Axia student taking two courses a semester would decide what day are best to complete all their work for the week, study and what days are best for them to rest. The next thing the student would do is total the amount of weeks they might have to complete the semesters and how many semesters they have to getting their degree.
Managing Time WiselyGen105 Appendix F.doc/myresource.phoenix.edu
o Balancing time between courses at Axia
Managing and balancing time is an important factor of daily life because it sets priorities in order. Balancing time in between courses at Axia requires one to set their priorities first. For instance, if a student decides that school is most important to them, then when that student should make class assignments and studying the first priority on their schedule at the beginning of the week.
o Juggling school, work, and family responsibilities
The best way to juggle these responsibilities is to plan regularly. For people who don't plan regularly, most of their day is spent planning what their next activity is going to be. However, if people were to take time a small amount of time out of their schedule each day and plan there whole day or one day out of a week to plan their whole week, that would save hours throughout the week that are usually wasted in everyday life by the average person.
o Prioritizing and avoiding time-wasters
The biggest time waster for people is pointless activities. To help avoid time wasting activities, the best thing for an Axia student to do is to create a time management log sheet. Creating a time management sheet helps students balance out their schedules after prioritizing their most important daily activities to the least important activities.
Fostering Reading Comprehension and Retention
Gen105 AppendixG.doc/Myresource.phoenix.edu
o Using reading comprehension techniques for successful reading
The Axia program teaches that there are many techniques and approaches to successful reading, but five main points; not expecting to instantly master material, thinking positively and critically, build vocabulary and understanding difficult reading materials.
o Using SQ3R and other study habits
SQ3R is a critical reading strategy worksheet to patterns in reading. The form is to ask questions for the reader to find answers for better understanding. These questions are in relation to surveying, reciting, reviewing, etc.
Applying Personality and Learning Styles
Gen105 Week8 Reading2.pdf
o Using your personality type for distance learning success
Personality is very important concerning distance learning success. Personality is affected by life changes, whether they'd be educational or professional. For distance learning, meeting new friends means new paths and opening yourself for change.
o Developing your multiple intelligences
There are eight intelligences Axia students are taught to develop; Verbal, logical, bodily, visual, interpersonal, intrapersonal, musical, and naturalistic.
o Relating to others who have different personality types and intelligences
Once one learns their personality type and strongest intelligence, then they can use their intelligence to enhance their personality type, by learning to study themselves, moods, actions and reactions, etc.
