How To Improve Personal And Professional Skills Education Essay

Simply speaking, management is what managers do. However, this simple statement doesn’t tell us much. We define management as the process of coordinating work activities so that they are completed efficiently and effectively with and through other people. In other words the term management is basically an act of getting a group of people to accomplish one’s desired goals or objectives. In this report it’s about the human aspects of organisation and the social and individual identities that shape up organisation and shaped by them. This highlights two important factors like personal development and professional development which includes developing techniques to understand ones behaviour and assess the required improvement which may involve various tools and strategies viewed at improving self knowledge.

Effective Management

Effectiveness is often described as “doing the right things”—that is, those work activities that will help the organization reach its goals. Effective management thus means the style practiced to achieve the goals and objectives. These may include:-

Good managing skills- managing your people or resources

Good task execution style-to complete tasks or projects with good planning, organizing and use tools like performance review this conveys a sense of necessity and has the persistence to get things done under tight time pressures.

Good people skill-Being a skilled people manager includes having the reliability to cultivate faith and the emotional intelligence to deal with different people successfully. It also includes superior empowering, coaching, motivating in developing people

Commercial in sight- This is to ensure that the focus is on the correct tasks, those that will add on the whole value. They use their planning skills to prioritize in mixture with the ability to understand how value is shaped. This means understanding the commercial aspects of running an organization and allocating all resources at their disposal wisely.

Three Personal Skills

Positive Attitude- I prefer to have to have a well positive attitude which helps towards embarking on any task which can sometimes improve productivity. Being optimistic has really been fruitful for me and I believe it will surely facilitate one’s personal as well as professional life. I never lose hope and keep striving hard to come out of any untoward circumstances whenever I am undergoing such circumstances.

Convivial or Social Disposition- it is always exciting to be in team work environment and have good friendly relations with colleagues at work or class fellows at college. It really fascinates to help others or to be asked for help by others, which heightens confidence level in my case. It makes one feel that he or she is at somewhat superior position which leads to create more interest in work or study.

Self-Confidence- To have confidence in one’s own self and his abilities leads to have a “can do attitude” which I believe is a key to success. To me sky is the limit and I am always eager to explore the limits of skies.

Three Professional Skills

Interpersonal skill – It is imperative for a good manager to develop good Interpersonal communication. He/She ought to be able to communicate ideas so as to motivate and inspire employees and explain complex issues and I am fortunate enough to such a skill naturally enshrined in me which further developed throughout my academic and work career.

Example a manager can be a problem-solver through the use of effective interpersonal skill.

Organisational Skill–One of the most important skills which I enjoy is organizational skill. This is about keeping eye on workflow and monitoring the progress to ensure that deadlines are met and responsibilities are completed efficiently and effectively.

Example the manager in an organisation has to develop strategy and oversee the progress of workforce.

Leadership- leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. The outcome of interpersonal communication skill and organizational skill is the leadership skill. I am a good leader or having aforesaid naturally gifted skills. My attractive personality and gift of gab make people to follow me. I can persuade people easily.

Example the manager has to control the workforce who is his subordinates.

HOW TO IMPROVE PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

Listening to others (Audi Alteram Partem)

Though this maxim is well known within the legal fraternity but it is best suited in every field of life. It means “hear the other side” OR “nobody should be condemned unheard”. I have to be patient enough to listen to the viewpoint of others before reaching any decisive point. Without entertaining the viewpoints of other people the decision so taken may lead to serious consequences thus I would like to involve other people and get their viewpoint and reach a decision after due deliberation.

Communication and Exchange of ideas

The other method to improve my skills is to communicate with the people more and more. Communicating with others enables to comprehend as well as convey the message what I want to say to others. I believe a clear and effective communicator may avoid any misperception or confusion whatsoever.

Admiring and applauding others’ performance

Admiring or applauding other people when they are performing satisfactorily may enhance productivity. I suggest use of this technique would produce positive results. It works as incentive motivating them to work more vigorously and energetically.

Effective Planning

To have an effective planning before initiating anything is important in the sense that it helps in setting up goals and objectives as what one wants and how to achieve. Setting up priorities and analyzing their importance along with scheduling and then developing strategies always help bringing about the desired results.

TASK-2

PERSONAL SKILLS AUDIT

Personal skills audit refers to assess the skills one has and further comparing them with skills required by an organisation so that the lack or excess of skill can be determined and overcome.

Why Skills Audit?

The chief reason behind carrying out a skills audit report in an organisation is to spot the skills and knowledge that the organisation need as well as the skills and knowledge that the organisation currently has. This helps to determine what training is needed to improve its knowledge and skills. It can sometimes be used as a tool in hiring new staff in an organisation.

Developing a personal skills audit report

This report has been developed with the application of tools like Personal SWOT analysis. Moreover as an example the aim I set to make the concept clear is that I have to find out a suitable job as a manager in an organisation.

“The Learning Styles element of the Learning Series highlights individual learning style preferences, equips people to choose learning opportunities, and shows them how to expand their repertoire and become the all-round learners vital to the success of your business”

The Learning Styles Questionnaire explores the four Honey and Mum ford learning styles:

Why am I doing this course?

The motive behind learning this course is to promote and improve personal and professional skills and learn how to overcome difficulties. The course will eventually help me achieve my ultimate goal of setting up and manage my own firm.

What other qualifications have I done that are relevant to this Course?

I am a law graduate and enrolled as an advocate. The course is related to my qualification in a way that I am aiming to set up my own law firm and studying Management sciences will help me set up and manage my this business and on the other hand it will help me practice in the field of commercial law. In the course I am learning the fundamentals of business which will obviously put positive effects on my practice.

Where am I now?

Having done graduation in Laws I, to the surprise of the people, decided to switch over a considerably poles apart field as compared to Law, though accidentally I may say, but this move suddenly drove me to the lowest edge of the learning. I have to learn even the basics of “the business and management”.

My Current Objective

To successfully complete MBA and establish my own law firm back in my home country to practice in the field of commercial law where I could further explore the skills and capabilities gained in the whole academic career.

Educational background

Graduated in law from University of Peshawar in the year 2007/08 with distinction

Achievements

Gold Medal from University of Peshawar Pakistan

for having stood first in LLB

MY PERSONAL SWOT ANALYSIS

Though my experience of learning in this new discipline is not long enough, yet I can analyse myself from different aspects, in the light of present and past experiences, including what area I am strong at and what area I am weak at, how to explore opportunities to my benefit and what are the probable threats in the way of my goals. The following chart reflects my current situation and circumstances.

PERSONAL SWOT ANALYSIS CHART

Strengths

Opportunities

Being law graduate with distinction and having sufficient experience of lectureship and interaction with the litigant public in courts, I consider myself to have good interpersonal skills.

Fair organisational skills which help me cope with a busy work environment, time management and create order in my life.

Since I have switched over to ostensibly a different subject which is a challenge for me but I have to work hard to know its nitty-gritty and ultimately convert it into my MBA.

Presentations within the class and discussions with the class fellows and teachers off the class help me clear different concepts taught to us thus I may become a good orator if I give more attention to this area.

Weaknesses

Threats

I am quite extemporal and impulsive and this thing often proves to be detrimental to me.

I have yet to learn to develop patience and foresightedness as it is the key to achieve my current and future goals.

I fear the shortage of time, any sudden circumstances in my personal or professional life OR any unforeseeable financial situation in the future may create hurdles in the way of achieving my aspirations.

SKILLS AND SELF ASSESSMENT

As stated above, I have got excellent communication and interpersonal skills owing to my profession as I had to interact with the litigant public in courts, had to address court and having been teaching at college level for quite a long time. Besides interpersonal and communication skills I have fair organisational skills which help me cope with a busy work environment, time management and bring consistency in my life. However I feel that being student of business and management I have to learn and apply the technical language of business and management studies as the jargon of various disciplines vary. As far time management and organizational skills are concerned, I have to work hard to bring more improvement to mechanize them and make them perfect.

Personal Skills

Positive Attitude- I consider myself to have a well positive attitude which helps me towards embarking on any task which can sometimes improve productivity. Being optimistic has really been fruitful for me and I believe it will surely facilitate my personal as well as professional life. I never lose hope and keep striving hard to come out of any untoward circumstances whenever I am undergoing such circumstances.

Convivial or Social Disposition- I love to be in team work environment and have good friendly relations with my colleagues at work or class fellows at college. It really fascinates me to help others or to be asked for help by others, which heightens my confidence level as well. It makes me feel that at least I am at somewhat superior position which leads to create more interest in work and study.

Self-Confident- I have confidence in myself and my abilities. This quality of me leads to have a “can do attitude” in me which I believe is a key to success. To me sky is the limit and I am always eager to explore the limits of skies.

Professional Skills

Interpersonal skill – It is imperative for a good manager to develop good Interpersonal communication. He/She ought to be able to communicate ideas so as to motivate and inspire employees and explain complex issues and I am fortunate enough to such a skill naturally enshrined in me which further developed throughout my academic and work career.

Organisational Skill–One of the most important skills which I enjoy is organizational skill. This is about keeping eye on workflow and monitoring the progress to ensure that deadlines are met and responsibilities are completed efficiently and effectively.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress is a mentally or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external influences and capable of affecting health, usually characterized by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability and depression etc. I usually feel stress when a concept is not getting clear to me or when there is a lot of workload on to be completed before the deadline is over. This state of affairs normally causes headache to me and make nervous disorder. In order to pacify my condition I usually talk with my husband, watch TV or listen to music. In fact by doing this I try to divert my attention from the thing causing stress and try to forget it for sometime. However when the source of stress is over I get very much normal and go ahead to do other tasks. Things do not stop on causation of stress. I keep the ball rolling and do not let this factor overcome me.

MY LEARNING APPROACH

I am more of a converger. I am focused on conceptualisation of an idea and use of deductive logic. I prefer searching the internet a lot for the information on a particular topic. The course books are a valuable asset towards my learning. Class discussions help me a lot to understand and grasp various concepts. I learn a lot through combined study session. I actively participate in a study group discussion. I can apply abstract models to practical problems with a significant amount of success. I take lots of notes during lectures for reviewing later. I prefer reading more than listening. Reading helps me memorise key concept and learn core ideas.

WHERE I WANT TO BE?

FUTURE ASPIRATIONS AND GOALS

My major objective of life is to establish my own law firm but in order to achieve the main objective lucratively I have to get experience of setting up and running one’s own business. No one can achieve his objectives overnight, one has to put in a lot of hard work and invest time and money. For the purpose I have to learn the fundamentals of business and management during my study course at CECOS London College and working with different organizations. This exercise will obviously consume years. I have to be patient, mature enough, resolute and steadfast; have to set short and medium term objectives for gaining knowledge as well as experience which would ultimately enable me to get my main aim of setting up my own law firm.

However currently I have set up first phase of objectives viz objectives regarding gaining knowledge. After having successfully achieved these objectives, I would enter into second phase by set up more objectives appertaining to the application of the knowledge so gained i.e. experience.

The following chart outlines the objectives:

Time Scale

Time Period

Comments

SHORT-TERM OBJECTIVES

Though my first semester is almost over however some activities will yet be included in this plan.

One of my foremost short term objective is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the various managerial concepts

I would also be working to improve my writing skills though I alreaady have good writing power but still there is room for development.

Another short term objective for me is to develop understadning of the next semester module. I want to get a headstart for the next semester.

3 weeks

2.5 weeks

One and a half month

MEDIUM-TERM OBJECTIVES

My medium term objective is to complete my “Diploma in management studies”. I am new to this kind of things but I have to work hard to keep things together.

After the diploma is complete I will convert it into a full time MBA. For that I need to put in a lot of hard work. The requirements for MBA are:

Operations management

Research methods

Dissertation

One year

One and a half year

I will develop a comprehensive study schedule, will maintain heathy habits and a positive attitude to concentrate on my objectives.

After I have successfully completed one year the MBA won’t be a major problem

LONG-TERM OBJECTIVES

After I had completed my MBA successfully, I would like to gain some work experience in a firm. I would join as an internee on scholarship with a multi-national firm.

After I have gained sufficient experience, I would apply for a full time job at the same firm or any other firm. The ideal position for me would be that of a “management trainee officer”.

After years of training and hard work my last major objective would be to end up in a senior management position e.g.executive director, AVP, VP etc.

One year

10 years

Working efficiently and proficiently with an independent outlook would leave a good impression on my senior colleagues.

Being a management trainee officer requires hard work and luck as well. I will put in my hardwork and with a little luck I will get through (“De Gratia”)

It will take time but patience is a virtue. I will need to be persistent and consistent to get there.

CONCLUSION

I conclude from this assignment report that PDP is a written plan of action. As a student of management studies it is very important for me to review my past performance, analyse my current situation and lay down meaningful and realistic objectives. PDP helped me achieved this objective and I was able to analyse my strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats in a complete manner. I also carved out ways and means to achieve my short and long term objectives

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Being a beginner I had to look the topics into various resources including Internet which significantly helped me. Initially I browsed Google, Yahoo, and other search engines which helped a lot to understand the basic concepts regarding the topic. Google and other search engines provided some basic knowledge which helped clear ideas and hence developed understanding of topic. Articles available on search engines are useful, detailed, scientific, comprehensive and latest. I tried to use non-technical language which could be understandable for a beginner and non-technical person like me.
