Leadership In Understanding The Ethical Behaviors Commerce Essay

My believe or understanding of ethical behaviour is a moral thing to do in terms of leadership or running a business organisation. “It requires us to be courteous, honest, fair, timely and ethical to respect the living and working environments of others, to act without discrimination and to use authority appropriately. As well, as the specific behaviours are identified as being unacceptable such as personal harassment, bullying, sexual harassment, racial harassment, abuse of supervisory authority and discrimination. In whatever field that we are responsible to, i believe that ethical behaviour is something, we should maintain as a leader because at the end of each day it is a right thing to do and we are able to get respect from the living and working environment around us. This will help the effective growth of the business and more support from our co-workers, colleagues and customers” (Geoffrey Hughes ).

“Many sociologists and management experts reiterate the importance of ethical and moral behavior in the workplace. Our workplace dictates our dressing protocol (the way we dress) for both man and women.  Men and women are supposed to conduct themselves with utmost dignity in the place they work. In the workplace it also dictates our verbal and non-verbal decorum i.e. polite and socially correct behavior. How we behave in our workplace goes a long, long way in building a rock solid reputation, praises and accolades in the years to come” (Hutagalung, 2010). Whereas, in an organization, workplace behaviour ethics should be a core value. Aside from doing the right thing, conducting ourselves ethically has great rewards and returns. Being ethical is essential to fixing problems and improving processes. It is needed to establish baseline measures and increase efficiencies. Most importantly, it is essential to having strong working relationships with people. On the other hand, covering up our unethical behaviour does the opposite of these important workplace practices and impedes on our ability to grow as leaders, as workers and as people.

As leaders, the importance of being ethical must be emphasized even more like what, leaders must always be having the knowledge of the fact that they are in a “fish tank” and how they behave is clearly visible to others. For different company or organisations have different behaviour over and above so as ethics also have different professions that cannot be violated. There are also things that you can gain from having good behavioural ethics in the workplace. The successful of the business eg. Telecom it is one of the largest telecommunication service provider in New Zealand and they provide a wide range of products and services. As a result, Telecom was operationally separated in line with the amendments to the Telecommunication Act and they are made up of five customer-facing businesses whereby they do play a different role to the society.

Another good example is The Warehouse store in New Zealand, from small beginnings in Wairau Road in 1982, Sir, Stephen Tindall’s amazing entrepreneurial ability combined with his team’s commitment to “give anything a go” shows you indeed that “nothing is impossible” (Tindall, 2006). The Warehouse believe that they have a responsibility to both New Zealand and New Zealanders. They have built their business on three key elements, People, Planet and Profit for over ten years now. They strive to ensure that all their stakeholders – customers, team members, shareholders suppliers and the wider community benefit from their retail activity. These have help to build a strong trust between the company and their customers.

The third example I can give is the Fletcher Construction the industry is their commitment to delivering ongoing value to all of their stakeholders - clients, their designers and consultants, subcontractors, our employees and shareholders, and the communities in which they operate. By achieving the agreed time, cost and quality parameters and their focus is an ongoing delivery. Fletcher teams achieve this through collaborative management, an innovative mind set, dependable resources and a commitment to certainty of delivery. The constructive and non-confrontational approach taken in all negotiations and the personal commitment made by key members of the management team to the success of the project. ”

So, at the heart of the leadership with ethical behaviour literally and figuratively is personal proficiency, whereas, leaders cannot be reduced to what they know and do they are as humans beings has everything to do with how much they can to accomplish with and through other people. It also builds confidence which will translate to trust among workers. Trust in their career is one invaluable trait that is able to pave way to progress and great success. In an organization, workplace behavior ethics should be a core value. Aside from doing the right thing, conducting ourselves ethically has great rewards and returns. Being a leader is a learner from success, failure, assignments, books, classes, people and life itself. And we should be passionate about our beliefs and interests, they expend enormous personal energy and intension on whatever matters happen and there are many things that you can gain from having good behavioral ethics in the workplace.

If we want to be a better leader or build more effective leadership in our organisation, we need to learn to have good ethical behaviours personally. As an individual leader, some leadership character comes naturally, but some will have to learned, because each person’s leadership will look and feel somewhat different based on personality as well as more external circumstances (position, job level, industry, company culture), every leader must master fundamentals. And without the basics, an individual cannot lead the management and cannot invest in future leaders because they don’t know what they are looking for. To know your predisposition enables you to develop a signature of leadership strength and this will help to focus on the progress of becoming an effective leader for a strong as a strategist that you need to pay attention to the rules for talent management and in the due process which makes a good leader and also benefits the business as a whole.

So, according to my research and after doing this assignment i can clearly understand the concept of the ethics of ethical behaviour in terms of being a good leader in terms of ethics and moral values. So, i can say that ethical behaviour does pay off in the run but its just the matter of doing things in a good and ethical and moral manner. It may seem a bit complicated but the achievement is very rewarding.

Question 2

“Leaders know what they value. They also recognize the importance of ethical behaviour. The best leaders exhibit both their values and their ethics in their leadership style and actions. Your leadership ethics and values should be visible because you live them in your actions every single day.

A lack of trust is a problem in many workplaces, if leaders never identified their values in these workplaces, the mistrust is understandable. People don't know what they can expect. If leaders have identified and shared their values, living the values daily, visibly will create trust. To say one sentiment and to do another will damage trust - possibly forever. In Trust Rules: The Most Important Secret, three constructs of trust are explored. Dr. Duane C. Tway calls trust a construct because it is "constructed" of these three components: “the capacity for trusting, the perception of competence, and the perception of intentions.”

Workplace ethics take the same route. If the organization's leadership has a code of conduct and ethical expectations, they become an organization joke if the leaders fail to live up to their published code. Leaders that exhibit ethical behaviour powerfully influence the actions of others” (Heathfield, 2010).

“Leadership, a critical management skill, is the ability to motivate a group of people toward a common goal. These items will help you develop your skills as a leader. The leaders will demonstrate the ability to hold themselves consistently through all trying circumstances, but friendliness is not hard to show for good leaders and they have a natural tendency to like people. An example the “ethical issues on the society, the involvement in the community whereby the character of the leader, on it’s own can do little without an action by building trust within the community, they will be the kind of leaders who will work to resolve conflicts when arises and try all their best to meet the needs of the community. The extent to which a business accepts its alleged responsibilities for mishaps, spillages and leaks, the selling of addictive products e.g. tobacco, cigarettes where most people think that the selling of such harmful products is unethical, however there are some who think otherwise. But based on the different view point that smoking enhance pleasure and reduce stress also it is harmful to our human body as it cause cancer. So, they put ethical thoughts such as raise the taxes for cigarettes and the prohibition of smoking in public places a law. By motivating them to good works, when leaders work hard on their inner life, others will be encouraged to see great possibilities.

Also the ethical issues arising from internal and industry practices eg. “the treatment for customers eg. honouring the spirit as well as the letter of the law to warranties and after sales service, the organisation’s loyalty to employees when it is in difficult economic conditions and the working conditions and treatment of workers”. Whereas a good leader will learn quickly to work with little and much and be able to plan decide the effective use of all resources available. “Leaders who are ethical are people-oriented, and also aware of how their decisions impact others, and use their social power to serve the greater good instead of self-serving interests” (Ednet Aberdeen ). Another eg. of unethical practice is a bribery in business practices. In a legal perspectives using “bribery to secure a contract (especially a contract with public sector body) is against the law and penalties will be imposed. The However, people who support this practice argue that it is a victimless crime and rationalize in the term “if we don’t do it, others will” The action in leaders is vital to the on-going growth of the group, as their action will involve responsibility and at times risky decisions will require someone to be responsible for the result but ethical leaders are the responsible person. So in my point of view bribery is illegal no matter in whatever the situation is. So, those people who don’t have money will never have a fair chance for themselves no matter how capable they are in their field of business. So, the possible solution is of strictly enforcing severe punishment for the practise of bribery applying to every individual in any circumstances” ( Huyphongsj).

So, according to my research and after doing this assignment i do have a fair idea of the impact ethical leaders can make on the society. As referring to my first example the disadvantages of smoking and its impact on the society and how can a good ethical leader can bring in forms of rules and regulation to control the consumption of tobacco products through restrictions.

And as per my second example which is of taking bribery in order to get business proposals or tenders, a ethical leader in these sort of situation can help in the enforcement of current law to stop such acts in order to support the business and the community as a whole.

So, ethics is really not just talking about doing the right thing but it is doing a what is right in every decision which is made. At times it may seem quite challenging in making such decisions but it is the right thing to do.
