Personal and professional goals
Personal and Professional Goals
As a child and even as a teenager one tends to make dreams and set goals for life. On occasion these goals are far stretched and sometimes even fairy-tale like, we tend to see life through a rose-colored glass, not taking into account the many sidetracks life throws our way. At that stage in life our goals tend to be less focused and somewhat unreachable. However, the process of growing up, or maturing, tends organized and center our goals, we learn to make compromises and set goals for our goals. There are different types of goals, short term and long term.
First, my family goals include how I see myself and how I see my family and the paths that life takes us. Being a mother and a wife to me has been the most important goal which I have set in the past. I am single now after being married for a decade and have no more desire to be married again but I still need to have a child. One of my most important goals is to adopt a child. The most important aspect of being a mother for me is to be able to raise happy and healthy children who are able to face the world in a positive manner.
On the personal front my goal is to step out of my comfort zone and challenge myself in the arena of public dealing and networking. I want to meet new people. I want to share my ideas with people who haven't always known me. I want a boat. I want to buy a house. I want to enjoy myself at work as much as possible. I want to grow. I want to learn. I want to feel challenged. I want to create something that is mine. I want to make my parents proud. I want the feeling of accomplishment. I want more responsibility and I want to give something back to the society.
On the professional front I plan to start a youth welfare society in the next 3 years. This plan fits in well with my personal aspirations. My personal aspiration to have children and give them a healthy future is perfectly aligned with my goal to give something similar to the society. I plan to start a development program for the at-risk youth and those who drop out of schools. These children are extremely susceptible to take to the world of crime and abuse. I currently work with the disabled children and would like to take it a step ahead by working with the youth. My aim is to create a development program for the affected youth and to bring them back to the mainstream society. It is my goal to minimize the impact of domestic violence, exposure to drug and abuse and broken family structures on the future of young people.
Every now and then we come across people who are unhappy with their jobs. The reasons of their unhappiness may vary - they do not like their work schedule, or they do not like a particular colleague in their office, or even that they do not like their boss. However, these vague reasons actually serve as a cover for the underlying reasons of all dissatisfaction with jobs - I have identified that the going up the corporate ladder is not one of the things that motivates me anymore. My key motivations are: new experiences, stability and satisfaction in terms of making a worthwhile contribution.
The report on personal and professional development plan has given me the opportunity to evaluate mycurrent skills and knowledge that includes my strengths andweaknesses. The personal development plan for me is a chance to know myselfbetter. Using these evaluation parameters, I can realize what I want to achieve or where I want to go inmy life in the short or long term. It also helps me to define theappropriate development to meet those perceived needs. In this report,I am going to focus on what my strengths are and where myweaknesses lie. I am also going to evaluate the options on how to use my strengths in the field I will workinto in the future, and how to develop my weaknesses to be mystrengths as well.Evaluation is the key stage to the self-development cycle because itenables me to discover whether that development activity wasworthwhile, applicable, and if and how my skills or working behaviorwill change as a result. (Kolb argued 1984 -76) Experiential leaning theorists have hypothesized four basic models inthe learning process.
- Concrete experience (feeling)
- Reflective observation (watching)
- Abstract conceptualization - formation of concepts andgeneralizations (thinking)
- Active experimentation - testing implications of concepts in newsituation (doing)
I used some learning style questionnaires and tools to identify my learning preferences and the score of this questionnaire showed I am a reflector, like to stand
back to ponder experiences and observe them from many differentperspectives. I collect data, both first hand and from others, andprefer to think about it thoroughly before coming to any conclusion. The thorough collection and analysis of data about experiences andevents is what counts, so I tend to postpone reaching definitiveconclusions for as long as possible. I listen to others and get thedrift of the discussion before making my own point.
I am also concerned about the feelings of others, relationship andmaintaining wide ranging interests. I am good at listening to othersand assimilating information is my strength as a reflector, however, Iusually consider lots of things before making a decision cause me slowto make up my mind. When I face a problem I will think of the many aspects ofthe events and consider what will be influenced by my action, after Ithink all of situations then I can make up my mind.
I plan to work on my decision making skills and not ponder too much about the consequences. In saying this I do not mean to say that I will make hasty decisions however, I will not be so risk averse in the future. The best way to do is to take small calculated risks. So far, I have avoided making many decisions due to fear of failure and rejection. I look for security and a cushion in everything I do. My long term personal goal is to be able to live independently and raise my children in a safe and respectable environment. And my professional goal of being an effective, less risk averse, better networked person will lead to the ultimate achievement of my aim to start a youth development center.
I would like to work on my personal brand and learn the art of standing out - take a strategic set of actions to distinguish myself from the rest. Given the results from the evaluation tools I used, I have come to the conclusion that I am not comfortable in my own skin at the moment. This could be due to my loss of self-confidence in the recent past due to my family issues. The strategies I plan to use to achieve that are:
- Create a no fear zone
- Play the confidence game
- Face off with what I fear
- Stop being perfect, practice excellence instead
- Over-deliver on my promises
- Surround myself with people who appreciate me
- Prepare for the unexpected
- Keep on top of what's happening in your world
- Be more communicative than anyone else
- Not to forget to look over my shoulder
