Photo genesis

The Cutera Photo Genesis is a light-based procedure that uses an Intense Pulse Light (IPL) to treat age spots and other aging signs, skin pigmentation abnormalities and sun damaged skin on the face, chest, arms and hands, shoulders, and other parts of the body.

Specifically, Photo Genesis can correct or repair brown spots, diffuse redness, freckles, fine lines and wrinkles, redness, skin redness or rosacea, sun damaged skin, sunspots, telangiectasia, and uneven skin tone. It can also rejuvenate aging skin and improve skin color, texture and tone.

Just like any other IPL-based systems, the treatment uses xenon flash lamps that emit full spectrum light. However, the Photo Genesis is a third generation IPL device and is a class 4 medical light system that is superior than other IPL systems. The device has a program selection to treat specific problems.

How the Photo Genesis works

The pigmented spots and red areas in your skin will selectively absorb the visible light emitted by the Photo Genesis device. The heating of the pigmented cells in the skin is the cause of the therapeutic effect. When the actual treatment starts, the device will first gently warm your skin and when the hand piece is emitting the IPL, you will feel a brief and mild pinching sensation on the treated areas.

The treatment session would only last from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the areas to be treated. There is no need to apply a topical anesthetic on the areas to be treated.

Immediately after the treatment session, the age spots may begin to darken and there is mild reddening of the skin surrounding the treated areas. These side effects will usually disappear a few hours after the session.

A few minutes after the treatment, the treated areas will turn to dark, superficial crust. The crust would remain until the top layer of the skin turns over and then the surface becomes pale, pink and smooth. The crust would eventually shed off, but the length of time would depend on the type of condition that was treated and the location of the treated area. The whole process of these side effects would last from one to two weeks. Then the new underlying skin would change from a pink shade to the natural color of your skin in a few days.

One to two treatment sessions are commonly needed to see striking results, but more sessions may be needed for very dark or large age and dark spots, dense freckles and severely sun damaged skin. The physician would also recommend that the sessions be spaced from three to six weeks to allow your immune system to accumulate the maximum amount of left over pigment between each session.
