Business Methods Academic

My name is Abdulrahman Al-Hutami, I am studying Foundation Course in Accounting and finance at the Manchester Metropolitan University. In this essay I am going to write about what I gained from this course specifically in business entrepreneurship and employability. At the begging of the year and before I start this unit I thought this unite based on exams. We have been told to buy the book of understanding the organisation which has been published in 1990, which I have been noticed that the book is not very useful and it is an old book, but I have learnt some of the topics and theories which I did not know about it before I enrolled this course and I found it very interesting. The Foundation course helps me to develop my skills such as essay, presentation and communication skills. Business is the social science of managing people to organize and maintain collective productivity toward accomplishing particular creative and productive goals, usually to generate profit.

The next subject which I would be happy to talk about is the Academic Methods. Academic Methods is the core study skills unit taken by all Foundation Year. This unit follows a blended learning approach with weekly, two hour sessions. The first hour is classroom based incorporating tutor delivery, discussions and small group work. The second hour takes place in a computer lab where we interact with online materials developing skills or working on Personal Development Planning (PDP) activities. When students progress into year 1 they start to appreciate how Academic methods and ICT are very important and has been in preparing them for their degree. From the survey which I have found from the MMU website the ex-Foundation year students who embarked onto the 1st year of their degree in 2005/06 rated the various elements of Academic methods as follows:

‘Many of the skills are invaluable, it also prepares you to go straight into the 1st year

without the usual problems of being in a new place. It is very interesting to see how the

foundation year students are on the whole much more prepared for their study than

many direct A level students. I also believe that many direct entry A level students

would benefit from some of the units studied on the foundation year, if not a full

foundation year. They often seem unprepared for university study even in simple areas

like referencing.'

(MMU student comment)

I think an academic method is very important subject which all the foundation year are taking it. From this subject I learnt how to work with a group of people and also learnt how to write a report and writing essays. I also believe that this subject helped me gaining a lot of skills and knowledge, which I will be using them, a lot into the university.
