Vancouver Referencing: An Overview

Vancouver Referencing is used by most medical journals and is akin to that of the BMJ. In-text referencing in the Vancouver Referencing Style is carried out by using sequential superscript numerical indicators which are then identified in a numerical reference list at the end of the document, as with usual footnote referencing.

To cite a book using Vancouver, use the following format:

  • Author - surname and name/initials followed by a full stop
  • Title followed by a full stop
  • Place of publication followed by a colon
  • Publisher followed by a semi-colon
  • Year of publication followed by a full stop.

Hence, a book is referenced thus in Vancouver:

To cite a journal article using Vancouver, use the following format:

  • Author - surname and name/initials followed by a full stop
  • Title of journal article followed by a full stop
  • Title of journal
  • Publication date in full followed by a semi-colon
  • Volume with issue number in brackets followed by a semi-colon
  • Page numbers followed by a full stop

Thus, the citation of a journal article in the Vancouver Referencing System would read like this:

To cite an electronic source in Vancouver, use this format:

  • Author - surname and name/initials followed by a full stop

  • 'Available from' followed by a colon and the URL underlined.
