Turabian Referencing: An Overview

The Turabian Referencing Style is named after its originator, Kate Turabian. This style of referencing is mainly used for term papers, dissertations and theses. It is a subdivision of the University of Chicago's main referencing style.

To cite a book in Turabian, style follow this format:

  • Author of text in the format of surname and forename followed by full stop
  • Title of work in italics followed by a full stop
  • Place of publication followed by a colon
  • Publisher followed by a comma
  • Date of publication followed by a full stop.

Hence, in Turabian referencing, a book would be cited thus:

Taylor, John. Turabian Referencing. Chicago: Chicago University Press, 1980.

To cite a journal in Turabian, style follow this format:

  • Author of text in the format of surname and forename followed by full stop
  • Name of article in quotation marks followed by a full stop
  • Title of journal in italics
  • Issue number
  • Publication date in brackets followed by a colon
  • Page numbers followed by a full stop.

Hence, in Turabian referencing, a journal article would be cited thus:

Taylor, John. Turabian Style. Referencing Today 2 (August 2008): 23-37.

To cite an electronic source in Turabian style, follow this format:

  • Author of article in the format of surname and forename followed by full stop
  • Name of article in quotation marks followed by a full stop
  • Name of website in italics followed by a full stop
  • Date of publication on website followed by a full stop
  • Date accessed
  • Website URL

Hence, in Turabian referencing, an electronic source would be cited thus:

You may use either footnotes or parenthesis for referencing in-text quotations within Turabian.
