Ingredients of a Perfect Essay

  • Plenty of relevant background information. Unless you are writing a work of fiction you need to have information that will address the topic of the essay. Have to hand all the notes, books, articles and other source materials that you are using.
  • Time, space, peace and quiet - the perfect essay will come together best if you have conditions conducive to thought and reflection.
  • Organise your thoughts. The best way to do this when essay writing is to write down the title and then just go for it by writing a rough draft. Don't stop to correct yourself. Don't try to get it right first time. Think of it as making a sketch of a scene you intend to paint later.

N.B. Writing and editing are two entirely different skills. If you try to edit while you write - or vice versa - you won't do a good job of either.

Now you have the rough draft it is more likely that you know what you want to say about the subject. You are now ready to begin your edit. When you are editing take no prisoners - make every sentence serve the topic of the essay. If you have an opinion by all means express it, but only if it is on topic and you can back it up from your research and study.

Introduction: This is where you summarise the question you've been asked and introduce how you intend to proceed.

Argument: This is the main body of the essay and it is where you present a coherent picture of what you want to say. Try to follow a logical progression of thought and try to build your case idea by idea. All essays should be written as though they are addressing someone who knows nothing about the subject and therefore needs everything explained. If you leave out important information the teacher/tutor/examiner won't think you are doing it because you don't want to insult her/his intelligence but rather because you simply don't know it.

Conclusion: This should do as it says on the tin - it should conclude your argument. It needs to sum up what has been said earlier, highlighting the important points and trying for a concise ending.

Most essays need to have references included. Your teacher/tutor will tell you if there is a specific style of referencing needed e.g. Harvard. You might need to ask so that there is no danger you will lose marks for failing to provide proper references.

Don't waste 1000's of calories stressing about your essay! Use this recipe to cook up a grade busting meal of an essay that is meaty (fully referenced) and fat free (on topic and fully answers your essay question)!

Don't try to write like anybody else. It is your essay and therefore best if you write in
your own style. Just remember that essay writing - like everything else - will benefit
from a little structure. Think of it as adding craft to your art and just enjoy!
