Concept of crisis in political studies

This introductory chapter is going to constructs a thematic framework for the thesis. As the thesis contends that the CCP has reasserted itself through skilful interpretation and manipulation of crises, and managed to sustain the political system with minor tinkering, we need first of all to look at what a crisis exactly is and how it can be utilised politically. In order to improve the strength of the argument, the author seeks to explain that the politicisation of crisis is commonplace in all polities, not something narrowly applicable to China or CCP in particular. And then the author comes back and situates the argument within the Chinese context and trying to identify some distinctive attitudes and cultural inclination that do exist in addition to mainstream (western) understanding. This design is to lay the foundation for the discussion of the more specific and detailed cases in later chapters.
