Normally around 200-300 words, a dissertation methodology is a brief outline of what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it.

As the dissertation methodology varies from subject to subject (and even within the same discipline) you might find dozens of different methodology types.
However, they should explain the same basic things:
1. How ...
Firstly, you should discuss how you’re going to research, and why you’re using this method instead of another one. You’ll also need to show why this method is going to give you the best results. This will also give future researchers the information they need to recreate your research if necessary.
2. Where ...
Secondly, you need to answer some questions about Where – where are you going to find the right materials? Where else could you be looking? If you’re not going to look there, why not? Why is the approach you’re taking better than another one?
3. Are there any limitations to your research?
For instance, would you be swamped if you tried to read everything? How can you be sure that your research is going to give accurate results without the other things you’re not looking at? What assumptions is this going to give rise to?
There isn’t a need for lots of references at this stage. You don’t need to include a description of your findings (your dissertation should do that!).
There are going to be some differences between subjects – for a science or maths based dissertation, you’d need to discuss what types of calculations or techniques you’re going to use, so future researchers can replicate your research. If your focus is on an arts-based subject, you’ll want to briefly touch on why certain theories will be more useful than others (you can also do this in your literature review). If you’re going to be using software, could another researcher recreate the algorithms you’ve used? Always keep in mind what subject you’re writing in, and refer to the guidance given by your supervisor.
